Follow these steps to upgrade from McAfee VirusScan to MSE (Microsoft® Security Essentials)
(These instructions are specific to Windows XP)
- Download MSE® from the Microsoft® website at http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/ and place a copy on your desktop.
- Uninstall McAfee® (or whatever virus scanning software you're currently using) by finding it in the Add and Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel. You may want to uninstall any memory-resident anti-spyware programs that you are currently using as well. These include Windows Defender®, SpyBot®, Malwarebytes® etc..
- Double-click on the MSE® installation file that you downloaded in step 1 of this process. Follow the prompts to complete installation.
- Schedule when you want MSE to scan your computer for viruses. It will automatically update and works in the background whether you schedule scans or not.
- That's it! You're protected! As long as the circus tent icon in the system tray is green, everything is working and up to date.
Important Note: In some cases, the process for Windows Defender (msmpeng.exe) continues to operate even after Defender is uninstalled. This situation will be characterized by a dramatic decrease in performance as the service gobbles up a huge portion of available resources. Some ideas for fixing this can be found at http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-vista-tips/what-is-msmpeng-exe/ .
