Follow these steps to upgrade from McAfee VirusScan to MSE (Microsoft® Security Essentials)

(These instructions are specific to Windows XP)

  1. Download MSE® from the Microsoft® website at http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/ and place a copy on your desktop.

  2. Uninstall McAfee® (or whatever virus scanning software you're currently using) by finding it in the Add and Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel. You may want to uninstall any memory-resident anti-spyware programs that you are currently using as well. These include Windows Defender®, SpyBot®, Malwarebytes® etc..

  3. Double-click on the MSE® installation file that you downloaded in step 1 of this process. Follow the prompts to complete installation.

  4. Schedule when you want MSE to scan your computer for viruses. It will automatically update and works in the background whether you schedule scans or not.

  5. That's it! You're protected! As long as the circus tent icon in the system tray is green, everything is working and up to date.

Important Note: In some cases, the process for Windows Defender (msmpeng.exe) continues to operate even after Defender is uninstalled. This situation will be characterized by a dramatic decrease in performance as the service gobbles up a huge portion of available resources. Some ideas for fixing this can be found at http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-vista-tips/what-is-msmpeng-exe/ .
